Book of the Month: The Secrets of Empowerment
Author: Charles Gordon
Publisher: Power Publishing
Page Numbers: 161
‘The Secrets of Empowerment’ is a non-fiction piece, written by Charles Gordon, which presents, as the title suggests, the “secrets” to empowerment. Gordon became a millionaire at the age of 20, after beginning his business venture as a property developer at age 18.
Throughout the book, you are given the ideal methods of achieving empowerment through short, but straight to the point chapters. The book with over 50 of chapters, also known as ‘secrets’ identifies the typical examples, such as the importance of communication and long-term strategy. However, there are frequent instances of unorthodox tips which, after reading, became clearer and relatable to the business world, and the world in general. Secrets such as: “Who says crime doesn’t pay?” And “If you let someone kick you in the arse…” appeared peculiar to me, however, I understood the logic whilst reading.
One chapter which struck me “Show me your friends and I will show you your future”. Mentioned in the book as a quote said by, the character, Falstaff, in Shakespeare’s ‘Henry IV’, it is a quote that is resonant in both the business world and the real one. As a young student studying business and management, I recognise the importance of who a company associates themselves with in order to maintain a positive public relation not tarnish their brand image. In a non-business perspective, this quote is still relevant. Everyone has heard this from family, friends or other relations – you are only as good as the company you keep. Whilst we are all individuals, our peers are very influential in our thoughts and actions. Whether we like it or not.
I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who has a dream, an idea or an inspiration, who needs that little push towards them making it happen. As someone who has inspirations of my own, reading this book has informed me about the many ‘secrets’ towards my own empowerment for this blog and career.
Fake it until you make it.
