Dear Black Child…

Keep your head up.

As you struggle through the seas of racial slurs and misrepresentation, keep your head up.

As you wade in the waters of injustice and systematic oppression, keep your head up.

As you journey through the perilous task of finding yourself, keep your head up.

At times, your heart will resemble stone. At times, your head will resemble iron.

Like your hair, continue to defy gravity.

Like your skin, continue to resist the scorching glare.

Like your whole self, continue to be.

Your head is the temple of your thoughts, hopes and so much more.

Keep your head up.
